Tips on driving in Cuba

Petrol: Presently, Cuba features a wide net of petrol stations located over about 20.000km long tarmac roads. Nevertheless we recommend that you refuel always in due time.

Safety: Park your car in safe and well-lit places. Please pay attention to your luggage especially in bigger cities and do not leave it inside the car.

Car Rental: At the car rental agency a rental security has to be deposited in Peso Convertible (in cash or with credit card). An European driving licence (at least one year old) is sufficient, while the minimum permitted driving age is 21.

Traffic in Cuba: In Cuba cars drive on the right side of the road and except the bigger cities, there is only little traffic. In the whole country you have to pay attention to cyclists. At night you should drive more carefully. Animals and absent or inadequate lighting can become very dangerous. The traffic signs in Cuba comply with the international signs.

Adjust your speed to the present conditions. Speeding above 100 km/h is rarely permitted on Cuban roads. Planning your itinerary please keep in mind that several smaller roads are in worse conditions than the main roads. You should allow extra time per day for unexpected sights which will come across your way.
